Toyota is the brand name on the passenger cars, trucks, vans and buses built by Toyota Motor Corporation of Toyota City in Aichi, Japan. The maker's first vehicles carried the family name Toyoda, and the spelling Toyota was chosen in the mid 1930s because it was simpler and counted as luckier in Japanese writing. The company began trading under the new name in August 1937. Under the Toyota badge it sells small city cars, the Corolla, the Camry, the hybrid Prius, pickups and the Land Cruiser, while luxury cars go to Lexus and small cars built in Osaka go to Daihatsu inside the same group.
