Sales of the Publica began in June 1961 with a basic price of 389,000 yen. It was conceived as a family car for the Japanese government's national car concept and was the smallest Toyota car of its period, available as a two door vehicle only. This was the first model year of the Toyota Publica (first series, P10), 1961 to 1965, the first generation covered for the Toyota Publica; the 1962 model year follows it.
