Ligier is a French automobile and minibus maker created by the former racing driver and rugby player Guy Ligier, who lived from 1930 to 2015, and it specialises in microcars. It is best known for its involvement in the Formula 1 World Championship between 1976 and 1996. The firm entered the car business with the Ligier JS2, a mid-engined road sports car first powered by a Ford V6 and from 1971 by the Maserati V6 also used in the Citroen SM, and the final SMs were built in the Ligier factory in Vichy. Its early cars all carried the JS prefix in honour of Jo Schlesser, killed in the 1968 French Grand Prix. After the 1973 energy crisis hit sales of the JS2, the firm turned to microcars, starting with the moped-powered JS4 of 1980. In September 2008 Ligier took over the Microcar division of the Beneteau Group, and the Ligier and Microcar brands keep separate identities. The current line covers the JS50 mini cars, the X-Pro small commercial vehicles and the Be Up and Be Two open-air vehicles, and Ligier launched its first electric quadricycle, the Myli, in 2023.
