The Ligier JS5 was the first Formula One car built by Ligier. Designed by Gerard Ducarouge, it competed in the 1976 Formula One season, scoring 20 points and finishing sixth overall in the Constructors' Championship. The car also gave the driver Jacques Laffite, and Ligier itself, their first pole position, at the 1976 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. It opened the line of JS-numbered Formula One cars, named in memory of Jo Schlesser, that the French team ran until 1996, and it set the pattern for a team that would win Grands Prix within a year.
