Hitachi Rail

Vehicle and Equipment Manufacturers

Hitachi Rail is the trading name of the Railway Systems Business Unit of Hitachi, Ltd., the rolling stock and railway signalling manufacturing division of the Japanese group Hitachi outside Japan. Its roots lie in the Kasado Factory in Kudamatsu, which Hitachi converted into a locomotive plant after the First World War, and where it built early Japanese mainline electric and steam locomotives, later diesel locomotives and electric multiple units, and took part in developing nearly every type of Shinkansen train from the 0 Series onward. Abroad, Hitachi Rail Europe was established in London in 1999, the general-purpose A-train became its export platform, and in 2015 the division bought the Italian builder AnsaldoBreda, which became Hitachi Rail Italy. Its British trains include the Class 395 Javelin and the Class 800 family.
