Shinkansen E5 Series

The Shinkansen E5 Series is a Japanese high-speed train built for East Japan Railway Company and introduced in 2011 for service on the Tohoku Shinkansen line running north from Tokyo. It was designed for a top operating speed of 320 kilometers per hour, which made it the fastest regularly scheduled train in Japan at the time of its introduction, and it is most closely associated with the premium Hayabusa limited-express service. The E5 Series is distinguished by an especially long, aerodynamically streamlined nose intended to reduce the sonic boom effect the train produces when exiting tunnels at high speed, and by a green and white livery distinct from earlier Shinkansen generations.
