TX-2000 series

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The TX-2000 series is a dual-voltage electric multiple unit operated by the Metropolitan Intercity Railway Company on the Tsukuba Express line in the Kanto region of Japan since 2005. It can run on both the 1,500 V DC and the 20 kV AC sections of the line and so works the full length of the route, unlike the DC-only TX-1000 series, which is restricted to the Akihabara to Moriya section. As of April 2016 the fleet was 23 six-car sets, each with four motored and two trailer cars. The first six-car prototype was built in March 2003, and fifteen more sets were delivered from Hitachi between January and July 2004, entering service in August 2005. Four sets followed in 2008 and three in 2012, the last with LED interior lighting, thicker seats and opening windows at the car ends.
