JNR Class ED75

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Class ED75 is a Bo-Bo wheel arrangement AC electric locomotive that has hauled passenger and freight trains in Japan since 1963. Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Toshiba built 302 of them between 1963 and 1976. The original ED75-0 subclass began with two prototypes delivered in 1963, built by Hitachi and Mitsubishi, and later locomotives for cold regions were fitted with icicle cutters above the cab windows. The ED75-300 subclass of 11 locomotives ran on a 20 kV 60 Hz supply in Kyushu, the single ED75-500 was built experimentally for the Hakodate Main Line, the 91 ED75-700 locomotives used 20 kV 50 Hz for the Ou and Uetsu lines, and 39 ED75-1000 locomotives were built for express freight. Thirty-four of the ED75-700 were converted into Class ED79 locomotives in 1988 for the Seikan Tunnel. By April 2016 only five remained in service, all with JR East, and three examples are preserved, including at the Railway Museum in Saitama.
