The original rolling stock of the Tokaido Shinkansen, which entered service in Japan on 1 October 1964 between Tokyo and Osaka. Running at speeds up to 210 kilometers per hour on dedicated track, it was the worlds first high speed rail system and proved that rail could compete with air travel on medium distance intercity routes.
