The Hitachi small-type monorail is a straddle-type monorail built by Hitachi Rail for the use on the Sentosa Express. Its trains belong to the Hitachi Monorail line of ALWEG-based monorail and were part of a project to replace the aging monorail system that Sentosa had before. The trains are fully air-conditioned. They were first operated manually by train attendants, using digital automatic train protection to keep a safe distance between trains and automatic train supervision to set the route, and an upgrade to wireless communications-based train control in 2017 let the trains and platform screen doors run automatically and allowed more trains on the network. The trains are designed for a maximum speed of 80 km/h but usually cruise at 15 to 50 km/h.
