British Rail Class 395

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The British Rail Class 395, nicknamed Javelin, is a dual-voltage electric multiple unit that Hitachi Rail built in Japan as part of its A-train AT300 family for high-speed commuter services on High Speed 1 and the wider South Eastern franchise. It runs at up to 140 mph under 25 kV AC overhead wires on High Speed 1 and at 100 mph on 750 V DC third rail on conventional lines, and is usually formed as a six-car train that can be coupled into a twelve-car formation. The fleet was ordered in June 2005 and delivered between August 2007 and August 2009, making it the first Hitachi rail vehicle sold to a European customer and the first British order for a Japanese train. The whole fleet is operated by Southeastern, and the Javelin nickname comes from the Olympic Javelin services run for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
