Oldsmobile was one of the oldest car brands in the world, begun by Ransom E. Olds in Lansing, Michigan in 1897 and sold for most of its life as the middle car of General Motors, above Chevrolet and Pontiac but below Buick and Cadillac. It was the best selling American maker in 1903 and 1904 and its Curved Dash was among the first mass produced cars. General Motors bought the company in 1908. The brand was known for engineering firsts, and its sales passed a million a year from 1983 to 1986, but competition from imports wore them down and General Motors shut the division in 2004. The brand is defunct, and its models, generations and model years stay on this site with a link back to this page.
