By 1976, the last year for the 455 engine in the Toronado, the net rating dropped to 215 horsepower. The second generation, built from 1971 to 1978, was noted for the early use of high mounted taillights, and the Toronado stayed on the E platform it shared with the Buick Riviera, which was redesigned in 1974 and again in 1977, and with the Cadillac Eldorado. The last 455 year came as the second generation entered its sixth year, still on the E platform with the Eldorado.
