DeSoto was Chrysler's mid priced brand, set up by Walter Chrysler in August 1928 to fit between Plymouth and Chrysler and named for the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. Over its life more than two million cars and trucks carried the name, among them the radical Airflow of 1934, the Firedome, Fireflite and Adventurer of the 1950s and the Diplomat built for export. Sales fell sharply from 1958, Chrysler cut the line for 1960 and stopped building DeSotos after the 1961 model year had barely begun.
