By 1958 the Firedome's horsepower had risen to over 300 with the option of the 361 cubic inch V8, and zero to sixty took just under eight seconds with a top speed of 115 miles per hour. However, DeSoto's sales fell by almost sixty percent from the 1957 model year output, partly because of the economy and partly because of build problems with the 1957 models, a sharp setback for a division that had been struggling to hold its place in Chrysler's range.
