The Outback began as a trim package on the Legacy wagon for the 1995 model year, with body cladding and a lifted suspension, and was marketed against large truck based sport utility vehicles with the actor Paul Hogan as spokesman. Sales exceeded expectations, and Subaru's American sales chief said it saved the company. It became its own model in 2000 and a free standing line in 2014, and the seventh generation of 2025 moved to a taller crossover SUV shape. This site gives every generation and every model year its own page, in 7 generations: the first generation (1995 to 1999); the second generation (2000 to 2004); the third generation (2005 to 2009); the fourth generation (2010 to 2014); the fifth generation (2015 to 2019); the sixth generation (2020 to 2025); the seventh generation (2026 on).
