With the arrival of the third generation Legacy, the second generation Outback wagon became its own model. The US spec Outback was available starting in 2000, and the new body, smoother and rounder, was about three inches longer, with a slightly longer wheelbase and the raised roof kept. In Japan the new body style was introduced in September 1998 as the Lancaster. The Outback earned a good rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2000. Its model years run from 2000 to 2004.
