Models equipped with a 3.0 liter EZ30D H6 were introduced at the 2004 Chicago Auto Show. The ground clearance of the third generation is 8.5 inches in the US so as to get around fuel economy regulations, and 7.8 inches most elsewhere. The second generation Outback was in its last model year in 2004 in the US, and the third generation followed for 2005. Most versions of the Outback wagon have had all wheel drive as standard equipment.
