In 2016 the fifth generation Outback was in its second model year, and chassis stiffness was improved for it. To reduce aerodynamic drag, the side view mirrors were mounted on the sheet metal of the front doors rather than the base of the A pillar, as in previous models. EyeSight was offered for the first time in Europe on this Outback. Elsewhere the Outback became a free standing model line of its own, independent of the Legacy.
