Chantiers de l'Atlantique

Vehicle and Equipment Manufacturers

Chantiers de l'Atlantique is the large shipbuilding company based at Saint-Nazaire, on the Loire estuary in western France, and it is the maker behind every ship class and hull this atlas records for that yard. Its roots lie in the Ateliers et Chantiers de Saint-Nazaire Penhoet, which built the transatlantic liners Normandie, Ile de France and France, and the present name dates from the 1955 merger of the Loire and Penhoet yards. Through the twentieth century it built ocean liners, then ultra large oil tankers such as the Batillus class, then cruise ships for Royal Caribbean, MSC and Celebrity, as well as Cunard's Queen Mary 2. The yard was owned by Alstom, Aker Yards and STX France before regaining its original name in 2017, and today it builds some of the largest passenger ships afloat.
