The SS Normandie was a French ocean liner that entered service for the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique in 1935, celebrated for its Art Deco interiors and streamlined hull, and which held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing for several years. Interned in New York after the outbreak of the Second World War, she caught fire during conversion to a troopship in 1942, capsized at her pier, and was never returned to service.
