Alvis

Vehicle and Equipment Manufacturers

Alvis was a Coventry manufacturer founded in 1919 by Thomas George John as T. G. John and Company, which took the name Alvis Car and Engineering Company in 1921. Besides cars for the civilian market it built racing cars, aircraft engines, armoured cars and other armoured fighting vehicles. Rover took a controlling interest in 1965 and car manufacturing ended in 1967, though armoured vehicle production went on after the company became part of British Leyland and was sold in 1982 to United Scientific Holdings, which renamed itself Alvis plc.
