FV101 Scorpion

Automobiles

The FV101 Scorpion is a British armoured reconnaissance vehicle and light tank, the lead fire-support vehicle of the seven-strong CVR(T) family built by Alvis. Alvis won the contract for prototypes in 1967, the British Army accepted the design in 1970 and the Blues and Royals of the Household Cavalry received the first production vehicles in 1973. The hull is aluminium alloy so that two vehicles can be airlifted in a Hercules transport, and the original 76 mm low-velocity gun was backed by a coaxial machine gun. Its Jaguar petrol engine was later replaced by diesel units. More than 3,000 were built for the British Army and export customers, and it set a Guinness record as the fastest production tank in 2002.
