The Imperial was Chrysler Corporation's top luxury car, split off from the Chrysler line as a separate make for the 1955 model year to take on Lincoln and Cadillac. For twenty years it was a large V8 sedan, coupe and convertible with a succession of new bodies every two or three years, and it ended in 1975 when it shared nearly everything with the New Yorker. A downsized personal luxury coupe revived the name for 1981 to 1983. This site gives every generation and every model year its own page, in 6 generations: the first generation (1955 to 1956); the second generation (1957 to 1966); the third generation (1967 to 1968); the fourth generation (1969 to 1973); the fifth generation (1974 to 1975); the sixth generation (1981 to 1983).
