The original Defender is the coil-sprung Land Rover that began as the One Ten in 1983 and kept being built, with a steady stream of engine and equipment changes, until 29 January 2016. It had a steel ladder chassis, aluminium bodywork, permanent four-wheel drive taken from the Range Rover and, at first, the engines of the Series III. Ninety and One Ten became Defender 90 and 110 in 1990. It was sold as pick-ups, utility vans and station wagons, and about 2,016,933 Defenders were built in all before the line ended.
