The first special edition Defender appeared in 1992, the 90SV, built by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations department. The 90 examples for the United Kingdom were painted turquoise, wore a black canvas Tickford soft top, alloy wheels and, for the first time on a Land Rover, rear disc brakes, though under the bonnet was the ordinary 200Tdi diesel. Its roll cage later became the one used on the North American Defender 90. The SV90 and the equipment it showed marked the model's move upmarket during the 1990s.
