In February 1996 Land Rover and BMW, newly united under BMW ownership, began a joint project in South Africa to fit a BMW petrol engine to the Defender. The work was at first top secret, and within two or three weeks engineers had changed a V8-powered 110 over to the new engine, creating the first 2.8i. The reason was demand for a petrol alternative to the diesel after the V8 Defender was dropped. Six prototypes ran off-road and on-road tests of more than 500,000 kilometres in total.
