1997 was the final year of the Defender in the United States. The Defender 90 was improved with a 4.0-litre V8 and four-speed automatic gearbox, and 300 Limited Edition station wagons were built in Willow Green with a white roof, diamond-plate body protection and an external safety cage. New airbag and side-impact rules for 1998 could not be met without major changes that were not economic for such small sales, so Land Rover retired its North American Defenders at the end of the year. The BMW-engined 2.8i went on sale in South Africa.
