The first generation Transit was introduced in October 1965 as the successor to the Thames 400E, the first product of the merged Ford of Europe, and stayed largely unaltered for twelve years until the major update of 1977. It was built first at Langley in England and later at Southampton, and also at Genk in Belgium and Amsterdam, with Essex V4 petrol engines and Perkins and York diesels. A minor facelift came for the 1971 model year. Its model years run from 1965 to 1977.
