In 1972 the underpowered Perkins diesel proved unpopular and was replaced by Ford's own York unit. The Metropolitan Police reported in 1972 that Transits were used in 95 percent of bank raids, a measure of how common the van had become on British roads. It was still built at Southampton in England and at Genk in Belgium, and Amsterdam would begin building Transits for the Dutch market in the middle of the decade.
