In 1966 the Transit was in its first full year of sale, competing with Volkswagen's Type 2 bus and other continental light vans after the introduction in October 1965. It was built at Langley and then Southampton, as demand outstripped the capacity of the Langley plant, and used the Essex V4 engines in 1.7 and 2.0 liter capacities. Ford of Europe was formed in 1967, uniting the German and British subsidiaries that had built the old vans.
