In 1967 Ford of Britain and Ford Werke merged to form Ford of Europe, headquartered in Cologne, and the Transit was assembled in South Africa between 1967 and 1974. A second unified platform, the Escort, was launched the same year. The Transit's short V4 engines minimised the extra length needed to put the engine ahead of the driver, in a van that was produced at Southampton, Langley, Genk and elsewhere.
