Pontiac was the performance division of General Motors, a brand of affordable, sporty cars sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico. It was launched in 1926 as a cheaper companion to Oakland, soon outsold it, and took Oakland's place as its own division when Oakland was dropped in 1931. In the General Motors ladder it sat above Chevrolet and below Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac. After the 1959 models its advertising stressed the Wide Track look and the excitement of owning one, and cars such as the GTO and Firebird followed. General Motors agreed to end the brand in the financial crisis of 2009, the last car was built in January 2010 and the dealer agreements ran out in October 2010. The brand is defunct, and its models, generations and model years stay on this site with a link back to this page.
