The 1978 Grand Am was offered in two and four door models with a vertical bar grille and other trimmings to differentiate it from the LeMans, and standard equipment included power steering, power front disc brakes, the Turbo Hydra Matic transmission, full instrumentation and Pontiac's 301 cubic inch V8 with a two barrel carburetor producing 140 horsepower. In California, Chevrolet V8 engines were substituted because Pontiac V8 engines had been unavailable there since 1977.
