For 1978 a Sunbird two door station wagon was introduced, a close badge engineered variant of the Astre wagon, and a Chevrolet sourced 305 cubic inch V8 was introduced as an option on Sunbird coupes and hatchbacks. The Sunbird was built alongside the Monza, Buick Skyhawk and Oldsmobile Starfire at Lordstown, South Gate and Sainte Therese. The 1978 Sunbird added the wagon and V8 option, and the year was the third model year of the Monza based Pontiac compact.
