The Fiero began production in August 1983, equipped and sold as a commuter car, with all 1984 models using the same 2.5 liter inline four. Sales literature listed two models but there were at least three: the Coupe, the Sport Coupe at 8,499 dollars and the SE at 9,599 dollars with the WS6 handling package. It was the first four cylinder car to pace the Indianapolis 500 since 1914, and Pontiac exceeded its first year goal of 80,000 units.
