Saab was the Swedish car brand of Saab Automobile AB, founded in Sweden in 1945 when its parent company Saab AB began a project to design a small automobile. The first production model, the Saab 92, was launched in 1949, and the Saab 900 of 1978 became its best seller, followed in the mid 1980s by the Saab 9000. In 1989 the car division became an independent company in which General Motors took 50 percent, and General Motors bought the rest in 2000 before selling the company to Spyker in 2010. Saab petitioned for bankruptcy in 2011 and its estate was bought by National Electric Vehicle Sweden in 2012.
