The Saab 2000 is a twin-engined high-speed turboprop airliner built by Saab at Linköping, Sweden, designed to carry 50 to 58 passengers and cruise at up to 685 kilometres an hour. It began in the 1980s as a fuselage-stretched derivative of the Saab 340, planned for a perceived demand for a fast 50-seat turboprop that could match jets on block times over short and medium routes. It was launched in May 1989 with firm orders for 46 aircraft, with CASA building the wings, Short Brothers the rear fuselage and Valmet the tail. It first flew on 26 March 1992, was certified in 1994 and entered airline service in September 1994. The last of 63 aircraft was delivered in April 1999, and 31 were still in airline or military service as of October 2024.
