Saab 90 Scandia

Airliners and Commercial Jet Aircraft

The Saab 90 Scandia was a civil passenger aeroplane built by Svenska Aeroplan AB in Linköping, Sweden. In 1944, as the end of the Second World War came into view, the company decided to diversify beyond military work, which also led to car production with the Ursaab and the Saab 92. The board chose a twin-engined short- to medium-haul airliner as a successor to the Douglas DC-3, quite similar to it but with tricycle landing gear and a different tail. The prototype first flew on 16 November 1946, and the type seated 24 to 32 passengers. ABA, a predecessor of SAS, ordered 11, and SAS received eight between 1950 and 1954. The Scandia had to compete with many surplus DC-3s, which made sales difficult. Its last flight was on 22 July 1969.
