The Saab EV-1, also called the Saab 900 Turbo EV-1, was built by Saab in 1985 as a working, roadworthy concept car whose name stands for Experimental Vehicle One. It was a wedge shaped 2 plus 2 sports coupe based on the Saab 900 Turbo 16v, designed by Bjorn Envall with metalwork by Leif Mellberg. The roof was glass and carried 66 solar cells that powered a cooling fan for the parked car. Its bumpers were aramid composite parts that returned to shape after an impact, and the doors held carbon fibre side impact protection. The engine was tuned to 285 horsepower, giving a top speed of 270 kilometres per hour and a 0 to 100 time of 6.9 seconds. Its speedometer lit only the area around the current speed, an idea later used in production Saabs. It appears in the background of Back to the Future Part II.
