British Rail was the trading name, used from 1965, of British Railways, the state-owned company that ran rail transport in Great Britain from nationalisation in 1948 until privatisation in the 1990s; the organisation was dissolved in 1997. Alongside running trains it designed and built its own rolling stock. From 1948 that work sat with a Workshops Division of locomotive and carriage works, and from 1970 it passed to the subsidiary British Rail Engineering Limited. In this atlas the British Rail make covers vehicles that British Railways or British Rail itself ordered, designed or built, from the BR Standard steam classes of the 1950s to the diesel and electric traction that followed the 1955 Modernisation Plan.
