BR Standard Class 9F

Steam and Early Locomotives

The BR Standard Class 9F is a British heavy freight steam locomotive class built with a 2-10-0 wheel arrangement, introduced by British Railways in 1954 as part of its postwar program of standardized steam designs intended to modernize and simplify locomotive maintenance across the nationalized network. Despite being designed purely for heavy mineral and freight haulage, several examples proved capable of high-speed running and were occasionally used on express passenger trains, and the class was among the last new steam locomotive types built for British Railways before the network completed its shift to diesel and electric traction.
