British Rail Class 44

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The British Rail Class 44, also known as the Sulzer Type 4, is a class of ten express passenger diesel locomotives that British Railways built at its Derby Works between 1959 and 1960. They were numbered D1 to D10 and named after mountains in England and Wales, which gave them and the similar Class 45 and Class 46 the nickname Peaks. A 2,300 bhp Sulzer 12LDA28-A engine drove a Crompton Parkinson generator feeding six traction motors, and because a Co-Co layout could not be kept under the 20 long ton axle loading limit, a 1-Co bogie arrangement was used instead. Early teething troubles included fractured bogie frames and awkward vacuum exhausters; once Class 45 locomotives arrived the class moved to freight work at Toton, was withdrawn between 1976 and 1980, and two locomotives survive in preservation.
