BR Standard Class 4 2-6-0

Steam and Early Locomotives

The BR Standard Class 4 2-6-0 is a class of 115 steam locomotives designed by Robert Riddles for British Railways, essentially a standardised version of the LMS Ivatt Class 4 intended mainly for freight use. The design was drawn up at the former LNER works at Doncaster, which built 70 of them; the other 45 were built at Horwich, none came from Derby as first intended, and the last, number 76114, was the final steam engine built at Doncaster. An axle loading of 16 long tons 15 cwt gave nearly unrestricted route availability, and batches went to every British Railways region except the Western. Four engines, all built at Horwich, survive in preservation after rescue from Woodham Brothers scrapyard.
