The BR Standard Class 4 4-6-0 is a class of 80 steam locomotives built during the 1950s, introduced in 1951 for mixed traffic use on secondary routes where the BR Standard Class 5 and the earlier Black Fives would be too heavy. It was essentially a tender version of the Class 4 2-6-4T, with similar characteristics to the GWR 7800 Class but built to the universal loading gauge, and used the same running gear with the leading bogie of the Standard Class 5. Design work was done at Brighton by R. A. Riddles with help from Swindon, Derby and Doncaster, and construction was at BR Swindon Works. Its power classification was 4MT and its route availability was 4. Six members survive in preservation.
