BR Standard Class 5

Steam and Early Locomotives

The British Railways Standard Class 5MT 4-6-0 is a steam locomotive, one of the twelve BR standard classes built by British Railways in the 1950s and essentially a development of the LMS Stanier Class 5 Black Five. Design work was done at the ex-LNER Doncaster Works and most construction took place at Derby Works; 172 were built between 1951 and 1957, 30 of them with Caprotti valve gear and poppet valves and the rest with Walschaerts gear. The class had a trouble-free introduction and worked duties from fast passenger trains to slow unfitted freight, some lasting to the very end of steam in 1968, and five survive in preservation.
