Opel is the German car maker founded in Russelsheim in 1862 as a sewing machine firm by Adam Opel, which built bicycles from 1886 and its first car in 1899. General Motors took a majority stake in 1929 and full control in 1931, and with the British Vauxhall it formed the base of General Motors' European business until it sold both to PSA Group in 2017, which became part of Stellantis in 2021. Most Opel models are sold under the Vauxhall name in Britain, and over the years Opel designs were also sold as Holden in Australia, as Buick, Saturn and Cadillac in North America and as Chevrolet in South America. Every Opel model, generation and model year on this site links back to this brand page.
