The Kadett D was introduced in the middle of August 1979, with deliveries on the home market beginning in early September. In November 1979 the car went on sale in the United Kingdom, some five months before the Vauxhall Astra Mark 1 was launched in March 1980. Technologically it was part of a major investment for Opel in a new front wheel drive architecture. The 1979 Kadett D began the front drive era, going on sale in Germany in September and in Britain in November, ahead of the Vauxhall Astra.
