The ninth generation was one of the Thunderbird's most substantial redesigns, a sleek aerodynamic personal luxury coupe on a shortened 104.2 inch wheelbase of the Fox platform that shared its chassis with the Mercury Cougar and was a counterpart of the Lincoln Mark VII. It came as a base car, a Heritage and the performance oriented Turbo Coupe, built at Atlanta and Lorain until the MN12 car replaced it for 1989. Each model year has its own page.
