Only minor changes were made for 1986, including a center high mount stop lamp, and the Fila edition was deleted. In 1986 Ford also began work on the MN12 project that would underlie an all new Thunderbird generation, a car intended to compete with the BMW 6 Series, though the company believed the new Thunderbird would be too big a change for buyers to accept in a single step at that time. The Turbo Coupe remained the performance model.
